Making the Most of the Latest SOR

FEI supports data reporting and management with comprehensive solutions

The substance use and addiction epidemic continues to impact every corner of the United States, reaching communities and devastating families in record numbers. It’s estimated that more than 20 million people suffer from substance use disorder nationwide, and more than 100,000 people lost their lives to a drug-related overdose in 2021 – the most in any calendar year to date.

In response, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) recently announced the third State Opioid Response (SOR) grant available to all U.S. states and territories.

The program – approximately $1.5 billion in funding – is meant to support increased access to medication-assisted treatment, reduce unmet treatment needs and reinforce prevention and recovery initiatives. SAMHSA initiatives have continued to support increased access to medication-assisted treatment for opioid abuse, which include medications such as methadone and buprenorphine.

An Ongoing Crisis

The SOR announcement comes on the heels of two additional grant programs that are part of the Biden administration’s plan to address the substance use crises in the country. The two grant programs, totaling $25.6 million, will expand access to medication-assisted treatment and increase efforts to prevent the misuse of prescription drugs. The Medication-Assisted Treatment – Prescription Drug and Opioid Addiction and Strategic Prevention Framework for Prescription Drugs grants were available starting on March 15. Late last year, SAMHSA also released the Harm Reduction Grant for substance use prevention initiatives.

The U.S. saw a record number of overdose-related deaths in the 2021 calendar year, totaling more than 100,000. According to the CDC, nearly 500,000 lost their lives from an overdose involving an opioid between 1999 and 2019. Experts point to illicit fentanyl – a synthetic opioid about 50 times more potent than heroin – and lethal combinations of drugs as the primary reasons for the stark rise in overdose-related deaths.

Once again this summer, from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend (Fri, May 30 to Fri, Aug. 29) you may shift up to four work hours into the early part of the week to get a jump start on the weekends and close your virtual office up to four hours early on Fridays. We encourage you to coordinate with your manager and your teams to take advantage of the summer schedule. We know you’re all responsible professionals, always focused on the needs of our clients and the business. We trust you’ll consider the potential for urgent matters that may arise and ensure we remain available and responsive to clients, be flexible in managing appropriate rotations when coverage is necessary and properly notify your clients and team members when you will be away. So don’t be afraid to take us up on this offer and head out early when you can.

Just a couple of things to remember as you record your time:

  • If your vacation or other time off plans include a Friday, the Flexible Friday benefit will not apply during that stretch of time (you will need to enter a full day of ProLeave for each day you are out, including the Friday). In other words, you must enter working time in the days immediately prior to the Friday to use the flex benefit.
  • When entering time, your pay period total hours will not necessarily align with the pay period required minimum hours (it could be fewer or more depending on the calendar days in the period). Don’t worry about that. Just make certain you are working and recording at least 40 hours per week.

We hope this bright perk helps you unwind, recharge and get your fair share of Vitamin D. If you have any questions, please send them to humanresources@feisystems.com.
