FEI Partners with W. Va in Opioid Fight

Health IT solution to assist prevention and substance use disorder care management.

FEI Systems has partnered with the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) to provide a web-based data collection system that supports substance use disorder treatment and prevention efforts in the state. The comprehensive health information technology solution will also assist with waitlist program management, grant reporting and treatment assessment for residents needing state-sponsored care or without private health insurance.

“We are honored to be partnering the West Virginia DHHR in the ongoing battle against the opioid epidemic,” said Dr. Jiao Gu, chief executive officer at FEI Systems. “We believe our solution will improve health and human services across the entire continuum of substance use disorder prevention, treatment and recovery in the state.”

The DHHR awarded FEI Systems the data collection system contract on July 1, 2021.

Full implementation of FEI’s configurable health information technology solution is expected in the coming months, moving many of the state’s paper-based processes online and offering integration with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

The solution is expected to help the state coordinate resources and connect its network of providers to streamline and optimize care for substance use disorder. This system will automatically send data and reports to state and federal stakeholders and grant administrators, including SAMHSA. And, in addition to the technical support, it includes ASAM CONTINUUM, a digital substance use treatment assessment tool for providers.

West Virginia had a drug overdose death rate of 57.8 percent per 100,000 residents in 2017, according to the latest DHHR Substance Abuse Response Plan, far exceeding 37.8 percent, the national average prevalence of drug overdose related deaths.
